Floor decoration is an extremely important aspect of interior design, and nowadays, in addition to practicality, the pursuit of visual aesthetics in floor decoration has also been receiving increasing attention. As a common flooring material, even seemingly simple floors can exhibit a wide variety of appearances and create richer, more vibrant visual effects when laid using different installation techniques. Among these techniques, herringbone and chevron patterns—both diagonal laying methods—are particularly popular; yet they are often misunderstood.

The herringbone pattern involves joining the tops of two wooden floorboards at a 90-degree angle to create a “herringbone” design. This laying method is one of the more classic techniques for installing wood flooring—once laid, the floor appears to ripple like flowing water, extending along the direction of the joints, creating a visually dynamic effect while also enhancing the perceived spaciousness of the room.

For herringbone patterns, wooden planks must be cut into parallelograms with acute angles of either 45° or 60°, then aligned and joined along their center seams to create a herringbone-like pattern. Of course, this installation method consumes more materials. In addition, there are also special solid wood flooring options designed in a herringbone style; their richly textured finishes and three-dimensional spatial effects are unmatched by other installation methods.

On the surface, these two laying patterns may seem remarkably similar, but in fact, the differences are profound. The herringbone pattern uses two layers of prismatic floorboards arranged in a V-shape, while the chevron pattern features rectangular floorboards laid in an alternating, interlocking fashion to create a chevron motif. The differences in the types of planks used directly affect the final visual outcome. Compared to the chevron pattern, the herringbone pattern has a much stronger visual impact: the original horizontal and vertical spaces are disrupted by diagonal lines, instantly accentuating the sense of depth and dimensionality. In contrast, the chevron pattern exudes a more composed and elegant aesthetic. While it effectively creates a three-dimensional effect, it maintains a subtle and understated charm, avoiding an overly ostentatious visual impression.

The terms "fishbone pattern" and "herringbone pattern" are easily confused. Besides their similar appearance, there’s another reason: in English, “herringbone” is spelled Herringbone (originally referring to the skeleton of a herring), whereas “fishbone” is spelled Chevron (meaning a V-shaped pattern). Thus, it becomes clear that in English, the spelling “human-bone” actually refers to the “fishbone” pattern. This often leads to situations where, when we search for these patterns simultaneously in both Chinese and English, entries for both decorative motifs appear at the same time, making it easy for people to get confused.

The drawbacks of herringbone and chevron patterns are equally obvious: during installation, material waste can exceed half of the floor area, driving up installation costs. At the same time, these patterns place higher demands on workers' skill levels, and the numerous joints between planks can make floor cleaning more challenging. Moreover, it’s important to note that herringbone and chevron patterns place greater emphasis on visual appeal— the larger the space, the more impressive the visual effect will be. However, when used in small spaces, these patterns may appear cluttered and disorganized, so they should be employed with caution.

In addition to the traditional herringbone pattern, the walls also feature several subtle variations of herringbone flooring, such as straight herringbone and diagonal herringbone. Simply by changing the direction, these patterns take on entirely different expressions within the vertical space. You can also experiment with selecting floor colors of varying shades and alternating them in a staggered pattern—this approach will give the space a richer sense of depth and dimension.

The herringbone pattern originated in the 16th century in France’s romantic capital, while the term “chevron” first appeared in written descriptions of the Palace of Versailles. To this day, the Palace of Versailles still boasts its herringbone parquet flooring, which has withstood the test of centuries. The grandeur and elegance of this flooring continue to inspire awe and admiration. This herringbone pattern once deeply touched the hearts of countless nobles and became the royal family’s favorite floor decoration style. It was precisely during Europe’s classical period—when there was a relentless pursuit of mathematics and aesthetics—that the herringbone pattern reached new heights, receiving an even more profound interpretation through its unique geometric beauty.
